Introduction
The microbial metabolism is defined as the means in which a microbe such as bacteria, fungi and viruses gathers and obtains food and energy that is needed for its growth and development. The essay identifies the growth requirements for microbes and their respective drug treatment mechanisms.
Bacteria metabolism identifies the bacterial energy requirement for building and structural construction and protein and membrane strengthening that enhances the power of the bacteria. The minimum requirement has been identified to be supply of water, nitrogen, carbon and irons. Some bacteria such as Escherichia coli and Actinomyces viscosus, can synthesize all the lipids, amino acids, carbohydrates and nucleotides necessary that is a necessity for the growth and division. Apart from the basic requirements, bacterial growth also requires presence and supply of oxygen for fermentation to take place. Anaerobes such as obligates are however killed by oxygen since they lack enzymes or catalase that break down hydrogen peroxide to water and oxygen. In the human host, the bacteria ineffectively compete with the host's metabolism for iron and other nutrients (Alberts, 2002).
Bacterial infections such as those caused by Actinomyces viscosus can be treated by tetracyclines, clindamycin or erythomycin. Clindamycin is a protein inhibitor which inhibits ribosomal translocation by binding to the 50S rRNA of the large bacterial ribosome subunit.
