Guidelines for Health Promotion Project 
Purpose
This project will provide you the opportunity to apply concepts you have learned about health promotion concepts and strategies. You will research a topic related to health and wellness associated with one of the Healthy People 2020 topic areas. You will develop an educational health promotion project geared toward a specific population, for example, asthma prevention in elementary school children. The project will be presented in a 2-3 page APA format paper, which is an opportunity for you to enhance your written communication skills. 
Course Outcomes
This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes. 
CO #1 Discuss the professional nurse’s role in health promotion activities. (PO #1 & 2)
CO #3 Discuss health promotion, illness prevention, health maintenance, health restoration, and rehabilitation in relation to the nurse’s role in working with various populations. (PO #1 & 2)
CO #7 Identify health promotion strategies throughout the life span. (PO #1 & 2)

Requirements
1. Identify a health problem or need for health promotion for a particular stage in the life span (choose one of the focus areas from Healthy People 2020). Submit your topic to the instructor for approval. All topics must be approved. See the course calendar for due date.
2. Writing the Paper: You will individually research the topic and apply the information in writing a 2-3 page APA format paper.
a. Select a minimum of three (3) scholarly nursing or research article (published within the last 5 years) related to your topic, which includes health promotion and wellness content. You may need to evaluate several articles before you find ones that are appropriate. For more information on how to choose a scholarly article, see “Library Resources” and “What Is a Scholarly Article” in doc sharing of the e-College shell.
b. Write a 2-3 page paper (excluding the title and reference pages) using the following guidelines:
-; Write brief introduction of the topic and why it is important to health promotion. 
-; Include a description of the topic and the targeted population (include statistics).
-; Explain how the project relates to the Healthy People 2020 topic area you have chosen.
-; Summarize the articles; include key points or findings from the articles. 
-; Discuss how you used the information from the articles for your Health Promotion Project. Provide specific examples. 
-; Describe the approach (es) you developed to educate the target population about the topic. Include specific ways to promote lifestyle changes within the specified population. The approach should be appropriate for target population.
-; Write your conclusion and summary. 
c. Your paper must follow APA format: include a title page and a reference page; use 12-point Times Roman font and include in-text citations (use citations whenever paraphrasing, using statistics, or quoting from the article). Please refer to your APA manual as a guide for in-text citations and sample reference pages.
d. Use TurnItIn in time to make any edits that might be necessary based on the Similarity Index prior to submitting your paper to your instructor. Consult with your instructor about the acceptable Similarity Index for this paper.
3. General expectations
• All articles must be from nursing or scholarly journals and should include health promotion and wellness content. Articles must be published within the last five (5) years. If you are unsure whether the article is appropriate, ASK. You could lose significant points if the article is not from a scholarly source and/or appropriate to the topic. 
• Please ask questions if you need clarification; it is the student’s responsibility to clarify any questions.

Good health is essential for people’s well-being. With the increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases in the modern times, there is a great need to identify appropriate ways through which to address the health problems (Farley and Dowell, 2014). Childhood obesity is one of the major diseases that affect millions of children in the U.S. The condition is associated with various risks factors such as high blood pressure and heart diseases among others, which negatively affects the quality of life for those suffering from it. As part of the objectives of the Healthy People 2020, childhood obesity prevention is necessary to reduce the adverse effects of the condition in the society (The Healthy People 2020, 2014). There is need to adopt various appropriate approaches in educating those affected with obesity, on the need to embrace a healthy lifestyle to eradicate the health problem for a better living.
In the past three decades, obesity rate in the U.S has tripled with over 30% of children between the age of 2 years to 19 years being obese or over weight (McPherson et al., 2012). With the issue becoming a major epidemic in the country, the stakeholders in the public health believes the disease is attributed to the unhealthy environment in which children live, play, and learn. The unfavorable environment limits children from living healthy lifestyles where they can eat healthy foods other than fast foods that have high sugar and fat contents and participate in initiatives or programs that foster good health for instance, physical activities such as outdoor games.
Childhood obesity prevention relates to the healthy people 2020 objective of eradicating the disease through prevention-based action plan (The Healthy People 2020, 2014). The initiative is based on decreasing the prevalence of the disease among children in the U.S by utilizing the abilities of the federal government health officials, health care professionals, community, schools, parents, NGOs, and other relevant bodies to champion for healthy lifestyles for children.
According to Gollust, Niederdeppe, and Barry (2013), the multiple negative effects of obesity is a serious societal problem that warrants government and other relevant bodies to take action to prevent its continuous prevalence in the U.S. McPherson et al., (2012) believes it is wise to train ï»Â¿ community-based public health advocates and clinicians on the best approaches through which to prevent childhood obesity.
