Continuous Quality Assurance (CQA) in Public Health
Introduction
In health care institutions, there is a growing emphasis on patient-physician inclusive of cost-effective treatment. Quality management is an increasing concern for mental healthcare facilities. A psychiatrist would need to follow the progress of treatment and its outcome to check and improve the quality of care provided. Continuous monitoring and quality assurance of delivery of quality care in mental institutions are increasingly becoming important (Sass, 2008).
The reasons for continuous assurance is due to the increasing costs in medical treatment, enhancing options of making comparisons in treatment and success outcomes by agencies that make reimbursement. Suggestions from epidemiological and clinical researches of variances in clinical practice are unexplainable by the present state of knowledge in psychiatry (Donald, 2001). Many medical specialties have their clinical outcome and databases developed, yet psychiatry is lagging behind. This is because there is no proper definition of good quality care; there are no effective and reliable outcome measures, and it has the assumption that the physician knows the history of the patient, the changes and improvements.
Interventions, Outcomes and Research
There is need for accountability in mental health care. Those that are involved in providing psychiatric services need a way to access, manipulate information, and make good use of it. Administrators require the information to check on the quality and the cost effectiveness of treatment. Medical practitioners require the results of data to help in making rational decisions and assist in comprehending the complex relation between treatment, the clinical course and diagnosis (Macias et al., 2014). Patients, as clients of health care, require tangible results that show their progress, treatment and whether they are improving. Managing results depends on the contribution and teamwork of practitioners. It is important for psychiatrists to establish and have a common vision of health care systems going through continuous improvement.
Physician View
Psychiatrists were the main source of authority and validity in the decision making process of a patient in the past. Currently, the psychiatrist relationship with patients is no longer unchallengeable by the exterior world (Bartlett, 1998). Psychiatry has variances in the treatment process and in some circumstances there is no scientific evidence. There is a need to answer questions concerning not only on intervention into mental health to provide quality, but the individuals that would intervene and the techniques used. The success in implementing quality in psychiatry needs comprehending the leadership of individual psychiatrists; this is because it is their responsibility to deliver quality care.
The psychiatrist is the only authorized mental health practitioner to make bio psychosocial diagnosis. They need to continuously monitor the treatment progress of their patients by evaluating the results (Bhugra et al., 2007). Mental practitioners require a powerful tool that can evaluate and enable them to a...
