CULTURAL DIVERSITY CASE MOD 4
Name
Institution
Introduction
Cultural competence can be described as either behavior or policies that are included in a working system to provide effective ways of working in a cross cultural situation. It requires health care workers to understand their own perspective and that of the people they serve to avoid labeling people. Cultural competence means healthcare providers acquiring information about their patients, and then applying the knowledge in the practice to improve the quality of care (Wilson-Stronks & Galvez 2007). Culture being diverse can be complicated, but offers the greater benefits when applied. In healthcare setting applying cultural linguistic competence can be a challenge because it requires strategies that are respectful and responsive to individual cultural and linguistic needs.
Cultural and Linguistic Inclusion
Inclusion requires that everyone should be valued and their differences, be respected. Many healthcare settings are working beyond valuing diversity towards a more inclusive organization where high performance is the goal. Organizations should strive to build a more inclusive environment by reviewing values and what the organization mission stands for. It is important to put in place policies and procedures at all levels of service provision to reflect the level of commitment of an organization to effecting its mission values. In order to achieve participation of diverse employees, policies that make English to mandatory within a workplace can produce various outcomes. Some of the outcomes can have positive effects to the organization while on the other hand, might produce negative outcomes within the healthcare organization (Wilson-Stronks & Galvez, 2007).
Benefits of Cultural and Linguistic Inclusion
In organizations where minority groups are hired, they would have a unifying factor which is the language. By introducing English as a mandatory language in workplaces, employees especially the ones from minority groups would be able to more actively participate and support each other, compared to where other languages are encouraged, where some employees might feel left out in the work process. The policy, if introduced, would create an environment of trust and there would be mutual respect where all employees feel that they are part of the organization. Collaborative efforts would increase in workplaces resulting to quality service delivery to beneficiaries (Suomela-Salmi &,Dervin, 2009).
When English language is used, some of the medical terminologies can be easily be understood. Employees and clients would benefit from clear communication as it is assumed that majority understands English better and certain terminologies can only be explained in English. If such medical terminologies were to be interpreted into other languages, the meaning might change confusing the users. Communication would be effective as compared to if other languages were integrated into the system. Safety measures and various medical related issues like consent would be understood by all enhancing efficiency...
