Of the four cardinal components of service learning that exists (below), discuss which cardinal component of service learning you have built into your curriculum.  How will it fulfill the social obligations of your curriculum?


 



  1. Service Learning - Learning is primary.  The service experiences are designed by the instructor to meet predetermined objectives.

  2. Service Learning - Service is most important.  Community agencies determine need for service and recruit volunteers to meet the need.  Learning is an unplanned by-product of the service.

  3. Service Learning – Both service and learning are assumed to occur, but there is no plan to establish a relationship between the two.

  4. Service Learning – Service and learning are balanced.  Planning for both is shared by the educational and service community. The activities meet identified and meaningful needs of the community and provide planned and significant learning by students.

According to Ross (2014), service-learning is the measured connection between the academic curriculum and the service community. It is a learning activity that exposes students to various learning activities that benefit the community and others while developing the goals of the curriculum. The main objective of service-learning is to foster a sense of caring for others (Darby, & Lang, 2019). In the transgender curriculum, an example of a cardinal component of service-learning I have built into my curriculum is learning is primary.
