People are diverse in various aspects and in most cases the variations are as a result of differences in cultural backgrounds. The Purnell Model for Cultural Competence plays a vital role in enabling the healthcare practitioners as well as other professional to understand the importance of understanding their own as well as other people’s culture. Practitioners who are aware of specific and general characteristics of a culture are better placed to perform detailed assessment which guides them in developing an individualized plan of treatment. The Purnel model offers a holistic organizing framework for assessing culture and that can be used in various disciplines and various practice settings (Purnell, 2005). This paper is aimed at discussing the various Korean cultural concepts under the guidance of to Purnel’s model.
Death Rituals Construct of Purnells ModelDeath Rituals
Among the Koreans, death is perceived in various dimensions. To them, death may mean the end of a painful period, beginning of an afterlife in a different world, going back to where one came from or the departed soul’s dispersion. The soul of the deceased who die unaccompanied by their family members is believed to roam about and become a ghost (kaekkwi). Such a belief made people to remain close to their people during their last moments. It would therefore be a common practice to find family members always around their ailing person in the ward. It would also not be unusual for the family members to ask their ailing person in their last moments to be discharged so that they can die in the comfort of their homes. The family members, who are present when death occurs, are expected to wail (Kok). The wailing symbolizes expression of sadness and sorrow as well as guilt for failing to stop the death of their loved one. Another common practice among the Koreans is that men are not allowed to observe women in their last moments irrespective of their relations and women too are not supposed to observe the last moments of men irrespective of their family ties. Mourners are expected to dress appropriately with men donning on sleeveless coat and women are not allowed to wear jewelry and accessories and should not also comb their hairs. The corpse is laid down with both hands and both feet bound tightly together. The ritual of Kobok/ ch’ohon was practiced where the coat of the deceased was taken to the roof of the house and his name called out thrice. The coat is then used to cover the corpse. Bereavement
Death is followed by a period of mourning the length of which is determined by social status. If the diseased person had a high social status, the mourning period takes longer as compared to when the deceased had a low social status (Buswell, 2007).
