The State of California is in the South Western region of America and is the third largest State in America. Therefore, it is important to monitor the quality of air, water, and soil in the state because pollution in the state could have detrimental effects to people living in the State. California is one of the most polluted states in the country. For instance, the Clean Water Fund (2013) reveals that water bodies the State of California experience severe pollution, which in turn threatens the natural environment and the public health of Californians. Critical to the discussion is the fact that California records the highest usage of pesticides and fertilizers, which results in soil pollution (Saracino and Phipps, 2002). This paper identifies major soil, water, and air pollutants in California and the discusses concerns of such hazards on the health and safety of Californians.
To begin with, the Clean Water Fund (2013) reveals that no polluted waters in California have been cleaned even after the enactment of the Clean Water Act more than forty years ago. Additionally, the Surface Water Ambient Monitoring Program (2012) reveals that metal elements such as zinc, copper, cadmium, and lead are present in water bodies From California. The same author further asserts that the metal elements are released into the environment from plumbing, brake pads, industrial and commercial activities. It is notable that surface runoff from already polluted lands also contributes to water pollution in California.
