It important for nurses to differentiate evidence-based practice (EBP) projects from research-based projects. Differences exist between these methods of conducting research in aspects such as definition, impact, purposes, methods, and the nurse’s role. EBP refers to the integration of patient values, clinical expertise, and clinical research evidence to guide decisions in health care. On the other hand, research-based projects refer to a rigorous and systematic inquiry process that involves testing and generating theories about human beings’ health experiences as well as the processes and actions used by nurses in practice (Fawcett & Garity, 2008).
EBP focuses on translating research into practice, promoting consistency in practice, and increasing treatment responsiveness. On the other hand, research-based projects aim to find answers to the research question and to test hypotheses. Another difference relates to impact on practice.
