With a work force that spans a population of more than two million, nurses form the largest force behind the health care sector. They form the front line of defense offering quality health care to millions of Americans. This means that the form one of the most significant professionals in the health care sector that will shape the future of health care in America.As a result it became apparent that, it is crucial that this massive work force gets the right skills set to make sure that they have the right competencies to meet the current and future needs of the health care sector(Iom.edu, 2015).
There are quite a number of challenges facing the health care sector and have to be overcome to make sure that the health care sector is reformed. Aspects such the nurses’ shortages are severely threatening the future of the health care sector in terms of safety and adequacy. Issues like the shortage experienced in the past with regard to educational opportunities for the nurses also seriously posed a great threat to the continuity of safety in health care delivery(Thefutureofnursing.org, 2015b). There are technological shifts every so often and thus it became apparent that the nursing front also needed to make sure that it had the right skills set to embrace these advances for the betterment of quality health care. This prompted the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to approach the Institute of Medicine (IOM) among other stakeholders, in a quest to establish lasting solutions to, education, retention, technology and quality health care deliveryamong others now and in the future.
Robert wood Johnson foundation in the year 2008 approached the institute of medicine to form a committee and an alliance that would develop sustainable solutions in nursing. The committee that was formedwas chaired by Donna E. Shalala who was at the time a former US Secretary Of Health And Human Services.After the deliberations, the committee tabled a report that is commonly referred to as The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health. In the report are the major recommendations made by the committee on the best way forward for the nursing industry to ensure safety and quality health care.
The importance of the report underscores the future of nursing practice and quality care.The report made some of very crucial provisions for nurses’ education,development and nursing practice(Iom.edu, 2015).As part of the committee’s deliberations there are some very subtle messages to the future of nursing. One of the messages relates to the fact that nurses always practice in full extent of the training and education that they have. This is crucial as it points to the fact that nurses should always practice to the best of the knowledge and training. The second message points to the fact that, for the nurses to practice quality care they have to acquire higher education. This means that nurses should always strive to continually improve their academic skills relative to the practice(Thefutureofnursing.org, 2015a).At the same time they have to form a solid team with the physicians and the rest of the health professionals.
