Assessment
In the usage of home therapies, it is crucial that there is assessment of the needs of the concerned people. This is because the use of the home therapies involves the lay people who may have little knowledge on the requirements of the usage of the involved medical materials such as the oxygen. On this note, the oxygen use of this older patient at home would need assessment of the needs. There are the factors that should be considered as one gives the instructions for the usage of the oxygen. Nishi, Zhang, Kuo & Sharma (2015) clarify that; a crucial factor to consider here before giving the instructions is the age of the patient. The old age of the patient denotes that he may not be able to capture some essential instructions on a faster note. It would therefore be crucial that there is observation of patience as one gives the instructions.
The old man lives only with the wife, who is guessed to be of relatively same age. This compounds the issue in the sense that; she also needs to be instructed with patience. The smoking factor of the wife makes matters worse. The wife is said to be used to smoking a lot. This is a factor to be considered because; smoking reduces the amount of oxygen in the surrounding and introduces carbon monoxide gas which is of negative impact to a patient who requires oxygen supplementation. This needs to be given a lot of consideration because, by the time a patient is recommended for home oxygen use, it means they are in dire need of oxygen supplementation and therefore, anything that is oriented to minimizing the oxygen in their surrounding should be kept under check to ensure that there is no extreme of the same.
Leaning objectives
When developing a teaching plan; it is always crucial to have the learning objectives. The learning objectives are crucial because; they help the nurse to stick to the relevant points that are oriented to achieving the stipulated objectives. Again, the teaching objectives become useful during the evaluation of the outcomes. The outcomes are assessed on the bases of the objectives. Wrench, Darwin & Lawson (2015) observe that; this is done in view of how well the objectives have been met. In the teaching of plan of oxygen usage at home by this old patient, it would be crucial to have the teaching objectives. These would touch on two crucial issues.
The first objective would be to have the patient receive the required amount of oxygen at the comfort of their home in the required amount and throughout the time as stipulated by the provider. The other objective would be in the consideration of the prevailing circumstances. This would be to reduce the interruptions and disruptions that affect the flow of the oxygen in the patient. In the case at hand, this aim would aim to see that the wife of the patient’s habit of smoking does not interfere with the oxygen flow to the patient. This is a hard objective to achieve because, the wife is said to be deep in the smoking and takes a lot of cigarettes in a day.
