By and large, special populations comprise of people exposed to certain vulnerabilities that hamper their ability to access health services (Nick, et al., 2009). This paper explores why the homeless, as a special population, merit for unique health services within the United States. Admittedly, health care needs of special populations significantly differ from those of the general population. Homeless persons, for instance, have highly complex health care needs that call for a well-coordinated, specialized and comprehensive approach. Exposing the homeless to traditional health service providers results in misinterpretation of their complex healthcare needs and hence, only expert healthcare givers should attend to the population. Most notably, the homeless population suffers from socio-cultural isolation and addiction; conditions that make it impossible for conventional caregivers to fully attend to their needs (Nick, et al., 2009).
