Aspects of policies regarding the healthcare system in the United States today affect the community as a whole. It is understood that numerous bills are brought before congress sessions every now and then for consideration of entrenching them in the United states laws. The legislative process of transforming a bill to law is far from simple and even takes up to several months or years in some occasions. According to the laws of the land, any citizen may draft a bill, but it does need a sponsor (member of Congress) to introduce it in the United States house of representatives or the senate for that matter. This happens in a similar manner for both the state and federal levels of government (Abood, 2007).
This paper focuses on legislation regarding communal issues important to nursing, and how nurses as professionals in the public setting can influence public health policies (as laws). Many nurses today are discovering the need for change in public healthcare policies. They are increasingly becoming motivated to take a range of advocacy steps to influence legislation, public policies and regulations, which govern the health care system in the United States. For the most part, this involves stepping out of areas of their professional practice into the areas of politics that represent a kind of unfamiliar setting for most nurses (Cherry, & Betts 2005). According to De Navas-Walt et al. (2006), the number of nurses in the United States has grown to near 50 million and the cost of healthcare in the country remains a major concern due to its constant rise.
