People would be surprised to know that I am into theater and operas.
To what extent do you think cultural beliefs, values, and traditions may impact health education efforts?
I think it is very important. The openmindedness needed to learn about health, which is a very scientific field, is immense. There are many cultures and religions that do not believe many truths that science puts forth. Furthermore, some cultures are hindered from getting the care they need because of language and knowledge barriers, like in the videos, where Mohammad Kochi and Justine Chitsena are not getting the care they need because of communication issues and spiritual concerns (The Commonwealth Fund, 2007a; The Commonwealth Fund, 2007c). Other considerations may also include how people perceive efforts to improve their health. While it is necessary to educate people about their health, some people who have been subjected to profiling may lose faith or hope in getting treatment (The Commonwealth Fund, 2007b). This may impact health education efforts negatively, especially those that aim to encourage people to get the health care they need.
