The Role of RN in Meeting the Needs of the Patient with Scoliosis and How It Affects Family Dynamics
Nurses can help detect scoliosis especially in children during screening process, especially in learning institutions. Although screening is not mandatory, it can be initiated to ensure children get right treatment for scoliosis. During the primary care in children, physicians can conduct a physical check up despite a child showing no signs of scoliosis (O&P Business News, 2012). Treatment depends on the degree of the curvature; if the curve if less than 25°, the patient needs to be monitored closely as he/she grows. If the curve does not enlarge, then further treatment would not be necessary. For a curve of 25° and 50°, bracing can be an option for treatment, but a curve of more than 50° requires surgery . Age is important in considering the type of treatment to offer. Wearing a back brace is highly recommended as it helps in ensuring that the spinal curve does not grow large enough to require surgery (Weinstein et al., 2013).
Involving family member is important because patients’ activities and lifestyle need to be observed to ensure success of the type of treatment, especially when deciding on whether to wear braces or not, and which type of braces is more appropriate.
