Introduction
There have been myriads of efforts by different entities in the field of medicine to try and improve the condition on the ground in terms of nursing practice, nursing education as well as the development of nursing workforce. One of the entities that venture in deliberations of this nature is the varied nursing oriented foundations. This paper analyses the contributions of the Robert Wood Johnson foundation in the field of medicine. This paper also highlights the importance of IOM ‘future of nursing’ report that relates to the nursing practice, nursing education and nursing work force development. This paper also gives an overview of the roles of the state-based action coalitions in view of how they advance the goals of the future of nursing.

The Robert Wood Johnson foundation has played a crucial role in the advancement of aspects in nursing field that require changes in order to match with the changing need of the patients. Colby, Fishman & Pickel (2011) reveal that; the needs of the patients keep changing with changes in that emanate from technological advancements. There is therefore a need to orient the different aspects of nursing to the current waves in order to remain relevant. Robert Wood Johnson foundation has impacted on the nursing field by advocating for thorough examination of the nursing workforce. This has always led to detection of the loopholes in the nursing workforce hence; the necessary actions can be taken to prevent further deterioration and to guard against the negative effects of the weak areas.
This foundation advocates for utilization of the nurses’ education and training to the maximum. When this is implemented it leads to higher motivation of the nurses because they do not feel that the education they so much strained to achieve is underutilized. This foundation also advocates for higher quality training of the nurses so that patients can receive high quality services. It also advocates for full involvement of the nurses alongside the other physicians and care givers, in the redesigning of healthcare services. This enables the nurses to feel appreciated and in turn get motivated.
This foundation also calls for effective work force planning as well as policy making that is based on data collection and information infrastructure. Colby, Fishman & Pickel (2011) assert that; when workforce planning and policy making is based on data collection and information infrastructure; there is bound to be achievement of decisions that are accurate and matching the realistic needs on the ground. This aspect is opposed to the notion of making workforce planning and policies on theoretical grounds without considering the needs at the grass root.
The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation serves the purpose of stipulating the framework for changes in the nursing profession.
