A closer look at the health care sector and services brought about the need of making quality care available to the different populations within the United States. This was after numerous stakeholders in the health care industry saw the necessity of expanding the duty of the health care providers that included the pharmacists, primary care physicians and more specifically the nurses (Goudreau & Smolenski, 2014). As a result, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Committee initiative on the Future of Nursing in conjunction in conjunction with the Institute of Medicine (IOM), decided to develop a vision for transforming health care system that would address the issues involved.
Around the year two thousand and eight, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) made an approach to IOM so that they could establish an initiative for two years regarding the future of nursing. The original mission of the initiative was to produce a report that contained recommendations for a blue print that was action-oriented for the potentiality of nursing and it included alterations in institutional and public policies at the state, national as well as local levels. To enable the production of this report, a certain committee carefully scrutinized and produced some recommendations that related to certain issues. The goal was to identify important duties for nurses in implementing and designing a more efficient and effective health care system. The issues outlined the committee included the reconceptualizing the duties of nurses in the context of the whole workforce, the societal issues, the shortage as well as current and upcoming technology.
