Water Quality: Indiana State
Clean water is a valued resource and key to human existence. Animals and plants also rely on water for them to grow, therefore, all water needs to be maintained clean. The United States, just like any other country across the world is struggling to maintain clean water that will not affect the health of the citizens. According to a report by Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the country has over 156,000 public water drinking systems that serve over 286 million Americans. Each of these systems are meant to serve at least 25 people on a regular basis or 15 service connections (EPA 2008). Majority of the citizens rely on community water supply systems. Despite successes in ensuring quality water supply, the country is still struggling to achieve safe water amid rising modernization and industrialization which has affected a majority of the communities. One of the most affected state in terms of water quality is Indiana. The paper seeks to explore the extent of water pollution in Indiana State, the sources of water pollution, the effects it has to the community and possible approaches to minimize its impacts on the citizenry.
Indiana has the worst water pollution in the country
According to a report done by the Environment America group which is an independent investigation clique, the State of Indiana is ranked as the region that experiences the greatest water pollution in the United States (WSBT-TV Report, 2014). Industries and manufacturing plants deposited 206 million pounds of harmful wastes into the United States sources of water in 2012. Of the 206 million harmful waste, in excess of 17 million pounds was deposited in the Indiana state. This was the highest compared to the other states in the country. According to the research clique, those figures are founded on publicly availed statistics collected by the Environmental Protection Agency. These statistics are founded on industry individual reporting along with extra information from the Environmental Protection Agency as well as various state departments to a report known as the Toxics Release Inventor.
From the report, it is evident that 75 - 80 percent of water pollution is as a result of the domestic sewage. Deposits from the manufacturing plants such as sugar, textile, electroplating, pesticides among others are polluting the water. Contaminated rivers have an unbearable odour and have lesser plants and animals. A huge amount of household waste is poured into rivers and almost all sewage is not treated. Domestic waste has germs, plastic garbage, solid wastes, and infectious contamination and these poisonous materials affect water pollution. Different commercial discharge that is emptied into the river with no treatment causes water contamination. Hazardous things released from the industries are liable for groundwater and surface water pollution. Contaminants rely on the types of industries. harmful metals get into the water and lower the quality. A 25 percent contamination is triggered by the industries and is more dangerous.
