Information systems have become an integral part of almost all commercial and noncommercial operation in the society (Grandia, 2015). Most organizations are tasked with the responsibility of establishing and maintaining information systems, where they can manage their data within and without the organization. As such any organization or firm that handles a large amount of data has some form of information system to manage the same. Health care facilities handle large amounts of data, that is constantly changing and hence information systems play a fundamental role (Himss.org, 2015).
Evolution of Information Systems and the Impact on Health Care Delivery
Information systems came to the health care sector in the 1960s. At the time the hospitals used mainframes which would offer relatively faster speeds and more storage. However, this came at a great cost given that most of the mainframes were very expensive. Majority of the hospitals could not afford to buy and maintain a mainframe computer and thus it also emerged that several hospitals would buy and share the mainframe (Grandia, 2015). This also meant that several hospitals would also share their accounting systems.
