Jean Watsons’ theory of caring includes the carative factors of occasion or moment and the caring relationship. This means that nursing care should honor humans and their inner thoughts, including the prejudiced experiences, commonly known as caritas factors. In clinical practices, it translates to showing authentic care, being there and being supportive of the patient. It includes expressing positive and negative feelings to connect with oneself and the patient. In order to build such relationships, nurses need to be aware of any prejudiced feelings that may establish boundaries in forming this kind of relationship. According to Watson, nurses should identify the unique features of individuals in order to try and safeguard patients’ dignity (Watson, 2001).
Example of a Case for Caring
Mr. Elliot, a 60 old man, on admission was experiencing severe pain in his abdomen and frequently vomited. He admitted that he had problems with alcohol in the past during the initial assessment. Furthermore, he was suffering from diabetes. This was one of the causes that led to a knee amputation sometimes back. In addition Mr. Elliott’s wife recently died after a long battle with cancer. These two reasons are what drove him to drinking again as he did not see any sense of living. According to the nurse responsible for shift reports, Mr. Elliot is one of the patients that frequently requested to be given painkillers compared to other patients. The nurse has been taking care of Mr. Eliot and therefore, she understands the reason he needs the painkillers. In response to his suffering, the nurse contacted the doctor to change the order. As much as the doctor is hesitant in increasing the dose for fearing it might harm the patient, the nurse still supported the idea by mediating between the doctor and the patient that eventually leads to the doctor accepting to provide morphine.
Four elements including competence, responsibility, attentive and being responsive to the patient are considered necessary when providing care (Tronto, 1993). In relation to Mr. Elliott’s case, the nurse cared about the patient by acknowledging the need to increase the medication to ease pain. It was her responsibility to take care of Mr. Elliot and respond to the patients needs. She went ahead to provide care for him by taking action and informing the doctor to increase medication.
