Summary of Learning Style
Having a multimodal learning experience means learning through the combination of several strategies. Therefore, people whose learning preference is multimodal often use a combination of visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic strategies to learn. While they can learn through a single strategy, for the learning to be complete, many have to be taken through or take themselves through something again by applying different strategies. Teachers of such students will often find themselves creating lessons where they are making use of visual, auditory, and tactile methods. Maier (2010) writes that “multimodal teaching is successful because it appeals to all learning styles.” Every student will feel satisfied and will learn by whichever method that appeals to them. However, for those with a preference for multimodal learning, such teaching would mean that a student will have had the full package. If, for example, a student fails to fully understand something from one of the methods or strategies that was used, then the application of another would help clarify or offer a clear understanding.
Preferred Learning Strategies
People with a multimodal learning preference will often need to employ a combination of strategies, including visual, aural, read/write, and kinesthetic strategies. However, it is crucial to note that having a multimodal learning preference does not necessarily mean that one cannot learn using one of their multiple preferences. While they do prefer to learn using a combination of different strategies, they can also effectively learn using a single strategy. The preferred learning strategies for those who prefer a multimodal learning style include:
* Visual strategies – visual learning strategies mainly include the use of diagrams, maps, graphs, charts, and plans. As a student, one would need to use flowcharts, pictures, posters, slides, prefer lectures which make use of gestures, symbols, and textbooks with pictures and diagrams.
* Aural strategies – these include questioning, listening, recalling, and talking. People who prefer this learning strategy prefer information that is spoken as well as opportunities to question. As a student, one would need to attend discussions with both teachers and students, make use of tape recorders, and also attend classes.
* Reading/Writing strategies – these are quite simple and involve notes and text. Printed words are considered an important way of relaying and getting information. The materials used here include textbooks, essays, and handouts.
* Kinesthetic strategies – this strategy makes use of things that seem real. They include practical examples, case studies, and trial and error.
