Medical ethics are, in many instances, controversial. Legal concepts regarding the interpretation of medical cases and dilemmas aggravate the decisions. Medical futility is a precise term to define difficulties that arise during attempts involving making specific medical decisions. Futility treatment refers to any health intervention that is considered non-beneficial or harmful to a dying patient or person. Health intervention is classified as futile where there is no tangible benefit to the patient. Medical futility is considered to occur when a patient would suffer and succumb to disease despite treatment. Karen Ann Quinlan is a critical case in history that raises thought-provoking ideas covering morality, bioethics, euthanasia, civil rights to die, and legal guardianship within the realm of healthcare and medical practice (Darr, 2014).
Karen Ann Quinlan went into a coma and was followed by a persistent vegetative state after taking valium with alcohol while on a crash diet (Darr, 2014). She was put on a ventilator by doctors, but her parents requested a stoppage of ventilator support. Her family felt that any further treatment would help because she was destined not to recover.
