What does it take to be an effective health advocate? As a nurse, you have many opportunities to advocate for patients and populations, whether formally or informally. Being an advocate involves more than knowing how to lobby or to whom to write letters. It requires passion and compassion, commitment and courage.
In this Discussion, you will consider the attributes of an effective advocate for population health and/or the nursing profession. You will analyze those attributes that help nurses be a powerful force in improving the quality of health care.
To prepare:

Consider the multiple health care needs of returning veterans and their families.
Discuss two types of health needs returning veterans and their families might need. Identify two types of health needs returning veterans and their families might need. How might you advocate for the needs of this population. What type of advocacy skills would you need and how could you develop them. What responsibility does a nurse have to be an advocate? Give specific examples.

There are various healthcare needs for veterans and their families including improving health provision by improving healthcare insurance coverage (Jackonis, Deyton & Hess, 2008). The veterans may have post traumatic stress disorder and other mental illness, and hence there is a need for improved mental healthcare services and a strong social support. For the wounded veterans, there is a need for better healthcare services to cater for serious and chronic physical conditions (Jackonis, Deyton & Hess, 2008).
In order to integrate veterans back into civilian life it is necessary to focus on mental health issues as well as problems related to mucoskeletal issues. Providing health need does not end when the veterans are away from the battlefield, but rather should continue in order to improve the health outcome of both veterans and their families. Critical to improving the mental health situation is provision of counseling and metal health services. Essentially, to improve primary health care provision to veterans and their families there should be better communication, coordination and harmonization of current plan, while also integrating existing capabilities (Jackonis, Deyton & Hess, 2008).
In order to improve advocacy, one needs basic communication skills as this facilitates articulation of different viewpoints as well as relying on active listening. Hence, in advocating for the needs of veterans, I would learn more about the prevailing healthcare service provision of veterans and their families.
