The health care system in the United States is nearing a crisis point as the demand for expensive acute services grows in the shortages of key health professionals. Health care spending has been growing in many parts of the United States as annual health care spending per person hit $7,000 in the last decade (Peter & Hellen, 2000). The ageing population has affected the nursing population dramatically as the average age of registered nurses in 2006, was 48 (Peter & Hellen, 2000). Thus the ageing nurse workforce coupled with the few nurse entrants to the labor work force has continuously resulted in shortages of Registered nurses (RN’s). The trend is quickly spending in other healthcare related professions and consumers are taking part in health care decisions more than ever before demanding for better services and outcomes. The situation has thus created the need for new models in care delivery, where fewer health care professionals are needed (Peter & Hellen, 2000). However, the most desired outcome is the need to develop the innovative models to deliver health care to more people at a lower cost while preserving and improving patient quality and satisfaction.
Milton (2010) notes that the process of leveraging technology in care delivery has been of major importance in many health care initiatives. Many health care professionals deploy technology to manage remote populations and other complex outpatient care plans. Technology used in this case includes video-based tele-medicine systems that allow nurse-patient encounters, remote medication dispensing machines and other condition –specific software systems that consist of built in algorithms that assist nurses to identify when a patient needs a visit or intervening in care delivery (Milton, 2000).
