Nursing as a discipline is practical and requires leadership capabilities based on action and advocacy. Nursing leadership plays an important role in the personal and career lives of nurses. It further impacts the entire health care system, therefore becoming an essential determinant of an exciting professional environment. Leadership in nursing calls for shared responsibility to ensure healthcare objectives are achieved (Harris & Roussel, 2010). As a leader in nursing, one should exhibit high professional accountability, have a good career planning, and possess outstanding personal skills and disciplines that are necessary for inculcating leadership behaviours in a person (American Association of Critical-care Nurse, 2006). Leadership in nursing demands that a person demonstrates strong personal values and standards that guides towards achieving desirable professional ethics and conduct.
Ever since the dream of becoming a nurse was born in me, I have always envisioned being a highly qualified nurse with strong professional competencies. Throughout my academic life, I focused on subjects that relate to the nursing profession and these include subjects such as biology and chemistry, which I further pursued in my nursing degree. I believe i would have an exciting nursing career owing to my preparedness. I have a good awareness of the various ethical standards and behaviours that a nurse should emulate while providing health care services, and I understand a wide scope of what nursing entails. I intend to enroll to an appropriate professional institution and association and achieve the necessary certifications that would qualify me as a certified nurse, and further help me to pursue my professional development. Through these, I would be accountable for my career journey, which would end up being successful.
Although my current level of practice is that of an intern, I quite well understand nursing job requirements. As a nurse, I am supposed to provide the health care services that are of high standards, while respecting clients’ dignity. One is supposed to understand the diversity of clients and behave in certain ways that demonstrate respect for the various people’s cultures, beliefs, and values. In the future, I would like to be an expert in nursing, to be respected and to provide guidance to other nurses in lower levels. I intend to achieve this through continuous education and personal development that I would acquire through my experience.
Apart from innate leadership qualities that a person may possess, other leadership skills can be acquired by observing how other leaders in the profession act. Currently, I have started working on developing my leadership skills through action learning where I observe how other leaders make their decisions and solving problems, after which I try practicing the same. I get ample time reflecting on the newly acquired leadership skills and this helps me to incorporate them as my personal culture, helping me to develop professionally.
