Reflection Paper: Nursing profession

Nursing profession is a job that requires those that take it as a career understand the fundamentals of the same. It requires that nurses dedicate their years of service to others selflessly, other than that there is also the fact that they have to master the right skill levels. More than a century ago, most of the nurses carried out their duties through trial and error methods and this led to high numbers of patients with low satisfaction rates (Foster, 2011). Today, the rate patients that go home lowly satisfied by the kind of services that they receive at the hospitals has reduced. The skills level and the medical science and practice are developing at an ever increasing rate. Currently there are more than 45% of registered nurses that have acquired their bachelor’s degree.
In light of the need to have more nurses take the degree program, the institute of medicine came up with eight recommendations that are going to define the nursing world in the decades to come. One of the main recommendations is number four, which relates to the goal of having more than 80% of the nurses having the baccalaureate degree by the year 2020. Given that I have already taken the step to register for the degree in nursing, this means that I am on the right track. In future, there are going to be high requirement for the nurses to secure better jobs. These requirements are going to relate to the level of education, in which case they will be required to have a baccalaureate degree. My current program is going to help me to fit in to the IOM recommendations and the future of the job markets for the nurses (MGH Institute of Health Professions, 2014). This also means that, my skills level is going to be at per with the required and recommended standards, and as such, will have better skills set to execute my duties. Patient health and satisfaction is crucial for me and thus having the right skills level other than the amount of passion that I have will go a long way into making sure that I deliver the best.
