Tobacco use is among the many risk factors contributing to several chronic diseases like cancer and cardiovascular diseases (World Health Organization, 2005). Studies in the past have recognized the relationship between the escalating cost of health care and chronic illnesses. Nurses are the largest group of healthcare providers constantly reaching out to many tobacco users. They are involved in the process of delivering evidence-based interventions for tobacco use and dependence. Nurses play important role controlling tobacco use by monitoring the vital signs during their everyday encounter with patients, assessing tobacco use and noting it on the clients records (Harris, 2008).
At individual levels, nurses also educate the public on the dangers caused by smoking and the exposure to second-hand smoke. Presently, most nurses are involved in advocating for policies that promote smoke-free workplaces and the availability of tobacco cessation resources. Nurses are increasingly showing leadership role by embracing the tenants of health professional Code of Practice on Tobacco Control.
