The Parkinson’s is a disease that affects nerves in the brain leading to poor production of dopamine, a chemical released by the nerves which acts as a neurotransmitter. The Parkinson’s disease (PD) belongs to a group of diseases that are referred to as the Motor System Disorders. In the prognosis of the disease, it is crucial to note that PD is a chronic and progressive disease which means that when the patient is diagnosed with the disease, he/she are most likely going to die as it keeps on getting worse with time (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, 2014). The disease was coined after one of the English doctors called James Parkinson who back in the early 19th century wrote an article about the disease, detailing the all the aspects of the disease and how it affected the patient.
The key signs that a patient may be suffering from Parkinson are that facial expressions slowly fade away. This is due to the fact the patient has lost control of his facial muscles that are responsible for the facial expressions. Moreover, the patient will show signs of tremor and poor control of his limbs, rigidity of his trunk, unstable posture and poorly coordinated balance of the entire body (Parkinson’s disease Foundation, 2014). These are symptoms that start quite mildly and sometimes may be taken for granted in the early stages.
As the disease becomes more pronounced, the patient starts complaining of the inability to control his movements, poorly coordinated balance, talking becomes difficult and completing simple tasks also becomes complicated. The symptoms are further complicated by the fact that, the patient is not in a position to swallow properly and chew his food. There is also the aspect of the patient experiencing constipation and urination complications. Further, patients also have sleep deprivation resulting from sleep disorder.
