Sickle cell disease crisis refers to a painful episode that may occur in a person with sickle cell disease. Sickle cell disease is a condition that occurs due to genetic mutation and can be inherited from parents to offspring (Pecker & Lanzkron, 2021). Sickle cell disease crisis may occur suddenly and cause debilitating pain to the affected person. In sickle cell disease, the hemoglobin takes the shape of a curved sickle cell rather than the normal flat disc shape of normal hemoglobin. The consequence is that these cells become significantly rigid. The rigidity is greatly involved in the causation of the sickle cell disease crisis. This rigidity increases the likelihood of hemolysis. The rigidity also causes blockages which interferes with the normal blood flow (Sundd et al., 2019). The crisis occurs when the malformed hemoglobin clump together, causing the blockage of blood flow to major organs of the body.
