Introduction
For any of the patients that are suffering from any of the diabetes types, it is common that they are going to be taken through a series of tests. One of the most common tests that the diabetes patients have to undergo is the Oral Glucose Tolerance Tests. This test involves the assessment of the patients’ ability to break down sugar in their body, also referred to as the OGTT. It involves taking a sample of blood before the test, then the patient is required to take a fluid that contains around 75 grams and then later on after about 60 minutes, a blood sample is be taken. The idea is to test the blood sugar content relative to the standard levels. The biochemical hypoglycemia is a condition that is quite common during these tests on patients that are suffering from diabetes Type 2. In the past, most of the research has suggested that it may be linked to the diabetes Type 2, but data many suggest that it may be due to the fact that it is linked to insulin resistance (Mediplus, 2014).
For this reason, clinicians believe that there may be a link between insulin resistance and biochemical hypoglycemia condition as seen during the OGTT. Patients that have the Type 2 diabetes and those that are suffering from the polycystic ovary syndrome tend to have the insulin resistance in which case the patients develop a basal fasting hyperinsulinemia. Due to the latter, beta cells are desensitized to the changes of the glucose levels in the blood. Owing to the level of desensitization of the beta cells, the first phase of the OGTT is a response to the rise in the glucose level. In the second phase, due to the exaggerated compensation that follows, the response in this case leads to hypoglycemia. This king of reactive hypoglycemia is quite different from the biochemical hypoglycemia and thus the OGTT is not enough to detect the former (Marshall & Bangert, 2008).
