The Beneficial Effect of Psychological Counseling for Traumatic Event Victims
Psychological counseling can be defined as the emotional support offered to victims who have gone through traumatic experience and are left with psychological scars that if not addressed more often than not affect them emotionally, socially and at times physically. This is usually done by a trained professional to a group or individual (Bradley et al., 2005). Benefits of psychological counseling can be listed as:
Decreases stress
* In most cases individuals who are being counseled experience a lot of pressure and in most cases it causes stress. Talking to a psychologist usually is meant to help them relieve these pressures and the stress they undergo.
Decreases emotional aches and pains
* Psychological matters are usually accompanied by emotional aches and a pain, talking to a psychologist is meant to help one confront such pain and overcome them. Usually once this hurdle is overcome it is usually much easier for the victim to get over the emotional trauma (Helzer et al., 1987).
Increases relaxation
* The fact that someone is listening and understands what a victim goes through makes them feel relaxed and cared for. This is an important part of the healing process.
Gives a sense of well-being
* This is usually the last process in healing of a victim, it is usually experienced after talking to a psychologist and the trauma addressed (Edna et al., 1991).
In conclusion, the society of counseling psychology should ensure that psychiatrists attending to victims of traumatic events should look that their patients have experienced the mentioned benefits and are feeling better. A study analysis on a group of victims of the September 11 twin tower attack deduced that psychological counseling is very beneficially after the traumatic events that occurred on the particular date (Veer, 1998).
