Read the section Questionnaires versus Interviews on pages 305-306 in the textbook. How are these guidelines similar and different from data collected by nurses when giving care? What principles did you identify that are new to you but could be important in improving your collection of clinical data?
Questionnaires can produce generalized results given that it is possible to have large sample sizes compared to interviews. Nonetheless, the design of questionnaires, errors in coding, wording, respondent unreliability and misinterpretation can potentially threaten the reliability of questionnaires. Interviews are preferred because of higher response rate especially in face to face interviews. Compared to the questionnaires, one would also prefer the interview because a well designed interview tends to be more in depth. However, for nurses collecting data through interviews, maintaining privacy and confidentiality is of paramount importance. According to Polit, & Beck (2012), close ended questions are preferable in interviews as respondents dislike composing responses. This is a new observation that would prove vital for nurses if they want to engage better with respondents, and they can also rely on proving to improve data quality where necessary.
Even for nurse collecting data, anonymity has at times been useful to improve response from potential respondents highlighting, this approach as one that can provide useful data where there is a high likelihood of non-response. In any case, clinical nurses also take into account the cost implication of using questionnaires which is preferred because of the low cost. Besides the purpose of collecting data, the likely repose rate and costs associated with data collection affect the decisions made by nurses in light of time and resource constraints. It is noteworthy that questionnaires are particularly useful in situations where the researcher needs to establish whether there is a prevailing trend or pattern in a large population.
