Reflective Journal: Nursing as a profession Qun Gao Student ID: 4186966 Professional Growth I 1156 Presented to: Cindy Ko Niagara College Canada June 11, 2013 According to the International Council of Nurses, nurses assist sick people in regaining their health, maintaining or improving the health of those who are well, or helping people to die peacefully. They do this in such a manner as to assist the clients regain independence as fast as possible. To me, nursing is not only a job but also a great job. This is where one gets the opportunity to work with people in all walks of life. The work setting includes: hospitals, long term care facilities, outpatient care facilities, home health organizations, or private enterprises. The nursing job is equally rewarding. As a nurse, I understand that my work impacts on people in so many ways, which they may not forget easily in their lifetime. When people go in a health care setting for treatment, they do have expectations that their deteriorating health will change positively. As a nurse, I am expected to provide care to patients at their most frightening or challenging times in their lives. This makes the profession of nursing to be unique. As a qualified nurse, I will aspire to bring a unique perspective in healthcare. I will also endeavor to orient myself in promoting health, disease prevention and quality treatment among my clients. I very well understand that, interdisciplinary involvement by all the staff in the health care setting is a crucial aspect in effective patient care (ANA, 2010). Therefore, I will consider this in the execution of my duties. Because of the nursing’s consistent and visible presence on the side of the patient, nurses and the health care team are placed in a unique position in providing leadership for patient care and capitalizing on the strengths of each discipline for the patient’s advantage.
