Using the Data/Information/Knowledge/Wisdom Continuum

Essay Instructions:

The central aims of nursing informatics are to manage and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom. This continuum represents the overarching structure of nursing informatics. In this Assignment, you develop a research question relevant to your practice area and relate how you would work through the progression from data to information, knowledge, and wisdom. The clinical research question for this paper is; has implementing the use of the electronic medication administration (eMAR) improved the safety of medication administration in the hospital setting? The purpose of this paper is to display the progression through the four steps of the data, information, knowledge, wisdom continuum that occurs through research information to answer a clinical question pertinent to nursing in an acute care setting. Electronic Medication Administration in Acute Care Setting To complete: Write a 3- to 4-page paper that addresses the following: Summarize the question you developed, and then relate how you would work through the four steps of the data, information, knowledge, wisdom continuum. Be specific. Identify the databases and search words you would use. Relate how you would take the information gleaned and turn it into useable knowledge. Can informatics be used to gain wisdom? Describe how you would progress from simply having useful knowledge to the wisdom to make decisions about the information you have found during your database search. Your paper must also include a title page, an introduction, a summary, and a reference page.

  Using the Data/Information/Knowledge/Wisdom Continuum
The developed question that is relevant to my practice area is as follows: has implementing the use of the electronic medication administration records (eMAR) increased the safety of the administration of drugs within the hospital setting? This paper displays the sequence during the data, information, knowledge, wisdom continuum which takes place through research information in answering the developed clinical question which is pertinent to nursing in an acute care setting: eMAR in acute care setting.
The question: has implementing the use of the electronic medication administration records (eMAR) improved the safety of medication administration in the hospital setting?
An eMAR is understood as technology which automatically documents the administration of medicine into certified Electronic Health Record technology with the use of electronic tracking sensors such as radio frequency identification or electronically readable tagging for instance bar coding (Moen & Knudsen, 2013). eMAR essentially enlist bar coding technology in submitting and filling prescriptions with hand-held scanners which read bar codes and then send them out to the workstation/terminal with the use of Bluetooth wireless technology. The Electronic medical administration records relay data about dosage of medication to the pharmacy that is then connected to nursing stations (Topaz, 2013).
Working through the steps of the data, information, knowledge, wisdom continuum
Nursing data would be collected during the practice of nursing through client-nurse interactions, observation, test-results, family disclosure and treatment. They can also be collected from various nursing databases. Data are essentially discreet entities and they are usually described impartially without any interpretation (Topaz, 2013). They are the discreet factors that describe the patient and/or the patient’s environment. In my research, data will include data on safety of the patient following the implementation of eMAR. Nursing information – data + meaning – is basically the transformation of nursing data into a structure that is meaningful and organized. Given the context, nursing information would be constructed by combining various data points into a meaningful picture. Information would answer the questions like when, where, what, and who (American Nurses Association, 2008).
Nursing knowledge is acquired by practicing nursing science and it represents the experiences, relationships, as well as rules by which nursing data becomes nursing information. By using my knowledge as a nurse, I would synthesize information so that the themes, relationships, and patterns are identified. Knowledge would answer questions of how or why (Thompson, Warren & Barton, 2009). Nursing wisdom, as Moen and Knudsen (2013) pointed out, is knowing how and when to utilize knowledge; it is an apt utilization of knowledge in managing and solving human problems. Nursing wisdom develops by way of praxis and it calls for nursing experience, values, and knowledge along with reflection on the nurse’s own practic...
