Validity in Quantitative Research Designs

Essay Instructions:

Validity in research refers to the extent researchers can be confident that the cause and effect they identify in their research are in fact causal relationships. If there is low validity in a study, it usually means that the research design is flawed and the results will be of little or no value. Four different aspects of validity should be considered when reviewing a research design: statistical conclusion validity, internal validity, construct validity, and external validity. In this Discussion, you consider the importance of each of these aspects in judging the validity of quantitative research.
To prepare:
Identify at least one potential concern that could be raised about the study’s internal validity.
CHOOSE ONE OF THESES

Consider strategies that could be used to strengthen the study’s internal validity and how this would impact the three other types of validity.
Think about the consequences of an advanced practice nurse neglecting to consider the validity of a research study when reviewing the research for potential use in developing an evidence-based practice.

Examining the validity of the study made Yuan, S. Hwu, L. et. al. entitled "An intervention program to promote health-related physical fitness in nurses" we have to examine whether the study was really able to establish a foolproof causal relationship between the dependent variable health and the independent variable exercise which in the case of this study, doing the treadmill for three months. We would also like to analyze the extent as to how this study can be generalized in the larger population CITATION [Pol12]Pol12. In this case we would like to know how confident we can be if we are to make similar or related studies on how exercise can and do promote health in general. In order to analyze this we have to look into the different aspects of validity such as statistical conclusion validity, internal validity, construct validity and external validity CITATION [eho01]eho01.
Statistical conclusion validity
In this study the null hypothesis is that exercise doing treadmill does not promote health related physical fitness in nurses. With the statistic p<0.05, it is saying that there is a small probability that the null hypothesis is correct. This statistic was used before the experiment and showed that the control group had better grasp strength, flexibility and durability of abdominal muscles than the experimental group. After the experiment, the experimental group was shown to have performed significantly better on body mass index, grasp strength, flexibility, durability of abdominal and back muscles and cardiopulmonary function also with p<0.05 significance CITATION [Yua09]Yua09. The use of logistic regression statistic was used to adjust for marital status, work duration, regul...
