Nursing has been a passion from the time I was of a tender age. I have always wanted to help people in their hour of need and thus the nursing profession came naturally, other than the fact that some of my family members are also in the profession. Patients are bound to be affected by their sickness or condition, which in most of the cases does not just affect the body but also affects the mind and their spirit. This is their lowest moment and is my driving force and motivation in this career. Every time I have a chance to help a person in their lowest moment of weakness gives me the strength and motivation to continue (Nursing World, 2014). There is innate pleasure in the nursing career and it comes from seeing a patient recover and able to carry on their lives without further pain.
As a nurse, everyday one comes across different people with different cultural backgrounds. Having been brought up in a family that is composed of more than one culture, I have always been very receptive of the different ways different patients act and behave. My parent taught me to be more of a free person and thus have never had any cultural preferences that would interfere with my job as a nurse. This means that I do not follow any specific cultural roots other than the normal etiquette that is acceptable in the place of work and in the general ways of life. As such, to me a patient is not defined by their cultural background and they deserve the best of medical care. It is also important to respect the different cultural preferences as some of the patients will insist on their values. It is now a common phenomenon, to find that a patient will come to the hospital and have some beliefs or cultural values that are conflicting with the professional health care practices. In this context, it is always important that the patient is made to understand the need of the right procedures.
One of the core and pivotal aspects that forms my nursing philosophy is the fact that I am a religious person. As a Christian it is crucial that every other person is treated with utmost respect and with love. As such, my religious background as a Christian has always been a guide in my area professionalism and the personal life. One has to be an all round person for them to take care of the rest of the persons around them. This is the guiding principle that I follow every single day. The completeness of every human being relates to their mind body and soul, in which case my mind has to be sound and the body healthy while my soul relates to the spiritual being. However, there is never at any one time have I ever discriminated a patient due to their spiritual orientation. According to my nursing philosophy, it is not professional to dispense health care with preference to certain spiritual context. Whenever a patient is brought at the hospital, it is not my job to evaluate their personal preferences such as their religious activities, but rather help them with their health condition (Shahriari, Mohammadi & Bahrami, 2013).
