The president intervened because he feared for a coal famine. During this period, the commerce and industry sector largely depended on coal to power domestic heating. Therefore, to ease the public anxiety on fuel shortages plus the increasing of coal the president had to take unprecedented action. Theodore had to intervene because as warned by Henry Lodge, a Republican, the coal strike would greatly bring disastrous outcomes for the party if it continued into November, the month for elections (Connelly, 2010).
