Chartres Cathedral
Like other cathedrals, when one enters Chartres Cathedral through the Central Portal one is at once drawn to the ceiling. The high ceilings are an indicator of heaven as found in many other Cathedrals. The central portal is located in the southern façade and portrays the Last Judgment through the images of the early founders of the Church (Olsen, 2007). The impressive statues depict those who have died spreading the word, with Christ the main figure among the martyrs and confessors. At the same time, the Central Portal portrays a contrasting feature of Kings and Queens in the Old Testament versus the impressive image of St. John above the door.
Walking from the apse down is the first point where one can experience the other five impressive architectural features, but visitors can only walk around the labyrinth because of the obstruction of the floor maze. Nonetheless, visitors can proceed to the apse, where they can choose to either take the right or left transepts which then resemble the cross. The Gothic architectures is impressive and appear to cost a lot of money given the high rising pillars which go all the way to the ceiling.
The nave of the Cathedral ushers one into building, where the congregation sit, but the nave is supported by the flying buttress, which also offer extra support to the vaulted ceiling. Even though, the Cathedral has dark stained glasses, enough light flows in to allow one to see Biblical depictions and saints. There are also the North and South Tower, and as one approaches the North Tower the impressive gargoyles are clearly visible. The three towers are collectively called the Royal Portal, with the Central Portal being bigger than the other two.
