Introduction
The American civil war was triggered by a conflict of interests between the southern states and the northern states. The northern states wanted a united country with no slavery where all people were granted equal rights. On the other hand, the southern states did not want slavery to be abolished as slaves were used in these states as sources of labor (civilwar.org, 2015). During this period, Abraham Lincoln was the president of the United States of America. This paper offers a discussion on how the southern and northern states used the American civil war to advance or protect their respective interests.
When Abraham Lincoln was elected as the president, he set out to make some constitutional amendments to abolish slavery in USA. The southern states were not happy about this and they seceded from the USA to form the Confederate States of America. The northern states feared that this secession would demean democracy.
