1. Read document 4.2 and 4.3. What appeal does each woman make to God's role in this moment in history? Select one or more passages from each document and explain.
2. Read document 4.4. Choose two passages you would like to discuss in class and post them in your homework response. You may wish to reflect on them in writing as well.
3. Lincoln's Second Inaugural (document 4.5) is considered by many historians to be his finest speech, however, some of the Nineteenth Century cadences might be difficult to decipher. We will work with it in class on Monday. This weekend, please listen to Professor Pinsker put it into context.
4. Handout 4.6: In his address, Lincoln is speaking about healing the country. He states, "The prayers of both [north and south] could not be answered. That neither has been answered fully. The Almighty has His own purposes."
In reading over the words of Caroline Barrett White and Kate Stone after the death of Lincoln- what evidence do you see of the statement above?
