Reaction Paper Name: Institution: The epic of Gilgamesh is one of the oldest literary works in the West. Gilgamesh was one of the kings from the great city of Uruk in Sumeria. He is said to have been a womanizer and one of the tyrants of the time as well as a god (Carnahan, I998). The people of the city believed in gods and looked up unto them, when they needed help and relief. His best friend Enkidu was not as kingly but came from the forest and had great strength and his sole purpose for existence was to humiliate Gilgamesh as their character were opposing. Together, however they took down the bull of heaven and the Humbaba (Carnahan, I998). This act angered the Ishtar and Enkidu was stuck with illness that killed him. The death of his friend shakes Gilgamesh and he seeks counsel from Utnapishtim, an immortal, who tells him that the secret of immortality is at the bottom of the sea growing in a thorny plant. However, the serpent steals the plant as Gilgamesh sleeps and he is left without the cure for mortality. Looking at the poem, a seminal ancient literature work connects to religion. The poem relates to the issues of today’s world of friendship, heroism, mortality, and the relationship between the humans and the divine (Libraryanalysis, 2010). Although the poem does not have a happy conclusion, it connects to the idea of human life and the afterlife, illustrating as bleak. It therefore draws a sharp contrast with most of the ancient religious believes, such as those held by the Egyptians, where the faithful would be promised of eternal life....
