Although the Americans did not fully comprehend what republicanism meant, they were committed to it because they wanted a republic to substitute British sovereignty. Their rejection of the British monarchy was based on the entrustment of important government affairs to only refined and learned men.
During this period, there were two significant types of republicanism. There was religious and American exceptionalism republicanism. At the start of the revolution, Americans believed that God was elevating and changing America for a particular intent. This convinced them of their religious and moral obligation to oust the corrupt monarchy. American exceptionalism also arose. This was an idea that Americans were peculiar people destined to lead the world towards democracy and liberty.
