Socrates Trail Name: Institution: Socrates lived through 469 to 399 B.C. and was a family man married to Xanthippe, with whom they bore three sons. When he served in the army, at ages 37, 45 and 47, he was a heavy infantryman, supplying his very own armor and weapons. According to many he was poor by choice without any regular occupation and wearing one cloak all the time and walking barefoot in any weather. He spent most of his time at the Agora, which was Athens civil center within a market place. Socrates had been a sub-council member/Prytaneis in the council of 500, whose duty was to preside over the assembly. In the year 399 B.C. Meletus a poet whom little is about, brought charges against Socrates. At the time public prosecutor were not known and individuals had to bring the charges to the king Archon. He had been charged with inventing new gods and corrupting the mind of the Athens children. Certainly, ‘the apology’ is not an apology, as Socrates defends his position rather than apologize for his mistakes. In his defense he tells the court that he is not familiar with the court system so he will just speak in the best way he knew how, truthfully, direct and honest (HYPERLINK "http://eawc.evansville.edu/index.htm"Exploring Ancient World Cultures (n.d). Apparently, the Delphi oracle prophesied about his behavior, claiming that he was the wisest man of the time. According to Socrates, he knew nothing to be wise, and therefore his duty must have been to expose the false wisdom of those that claimed they were wise men. It was for this reason that the youths in Athens admired him, while the victims of his critique hate him (Jowett, 1892). When Meletus interrogated him, instead of trying to find out the truth, he ends up embarrassing him. In one of the most famous passage, Socrates likens the state to a lazy horse and he as a Gadfly who stings the lazily horse.
