As a criminologist, I would address recidivism, given its role in the criminal justice system (CJS). According to the National Institute of Justice (n.d.), recidivism is an individual’s relapse into criminality, typically after the individual has undergone intervention or sanction for previous criminal activities or behavior. The United States (U.S.) constitutes the country that incarcerates most of its population globally. According to Benecchi (2021), there were over 1.8 million prisoners in America, with a significant share of that figure attributed to recidivism. In the three years following their release, two in every three ex-prisoners are rearrested, and over 50 percent of them are imprisoned again (Benecchi, 2021). In this context, recidivism is worth researching because it significantly contributes to the clogging of the CJS. In addition, the U.S. spends more than 50 billion dollars annually on corrections, only to record the alarming recidivism rates (Connor, 2021).
