According to Aitchison and Meckled-Garcia (2021), cyber shaming imposes reputational costs on the victim for demonstrating a specific model of moral and behavioral preferences. The act is tailored to disqualify the victim from public discourses and the ability to have authentic interactions with other humans. In this article, the victim, who happens to be a young scholar is shamed via an online campaign tailored to discredit her professional standing. The perpetrators were social media users who bullied the victim by creating a Twitter campaign against her. She was overwhelmed by the online tags and deleted her social media account. In addition, the victim has challenges sustaining healthy public interactions because the cyber shaming incident tarnished her reputation. This incident also pushed the victim into depression as she had suicidal ideation (Aitchison & Meckled-Garcia, 2021).
The Twitter campaign intensified the situation because the victim could not respond to all the allegations posted on her timeline. The claims that she was a “cop-murder-apologists” also tagged prominent politicians, potential employers, newspapers, and public figure...
