Legalizing assisted suicide to help patents with terminal illnesses to die with dignity
Problem statement:
Recent demographics suggest that the majority of the population is approaching 65 years of age. This is to say that most of the people in the society today are either elderly or just about that age in a few years’ time. While that is a worrying trend, there is also the concern associated with the fact that some of the people at this age are suffering from chronic diseases. These are diseases that take the lead as the number one killer in the states and therefore should be accorded the necessary precedence(Hudson et al., 2015).
Justification
Making euthanasia illegal only makes it more dangerous, given the fact that it does happen under the radar of the law. The best approach is legalizing the practice such that the patients’ lives are not endangered through poor quality procedures that inflict more pain that is necessary. The legislations would help establish proper procedures, licensed practitioners and patients requirements setting the boundaries and ensuring quality care(Nhs.uk, 2015).
Current status and provisions of the laws
One of the aspects that come out clearly under the current law is the fact that, it is the federal government that provides the funds that are used health care. In other words, the federal government offers massive support to the health care sector. At the same time it is the duty of the federal government to protect the rights of the citizens as individuals. This also means that it is the role of the federal government to advocate for all activities that protect individuals’ rights as citizens of the states.
According to the federal provisions of the law, euthanasia, assisted suicide and mercy killings are illegal across the states(Aspe.hhs.gov, 2015). As such, ant form of support that directed towards helping patients take their own lives is deemed illegal and thus can be prosecuted. However, recent activities towards overturning these directives may change the legality of the matter to offer provisions that are more convenient for the patients and the medical teams.
