According to the textbook, prison reform is often effectuated by and through the legislature. Often, these changes are meant for improvement; however, they can have an unintended consequence. Imagine that you are a state legislator that heads a committee for the Department of Corrections. Your responsibilities include recommending improvements to the correctional system, both domestic and international, (e.g., Guantanamo Bay). Go to Cornell University Law School’s Website, located at http://www(dot)law(dot)cornell(dot)edu/constitution/eighth_amendment, and review the Eighth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
Write a three to five (3-5) page paper in which you:
Suggest two (2) actions that the corrections system can take in order to attain higher levels of professionalism. Provide a rationale for your response.
Take a position as to whether or not conditions of correctional facilities circumvent the “cruel and unusual punishment standard” of the Eighth Amendment. Provide a rationale for your response.
Support or refute the removal of corporal punishment from the U.S. corrections system. Provide a rationale for your response.
Create an argument for or against intermediate sanctions as a deterrent of crime. Support your viewpoint with one (1) example of intermediate sanctions that reflects your opinion.
Debate whether or not correctional facilities are adequately equipped to deal with mentally ill inmates. Provide a rationale for your response.
Use at least two (2) quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other Websites do not qualify as academic resources.

America has the largest prison population; presently the US prison population exceeds other countries due to tough policies on crime. The US growing prison population have continually have resulted to overcrowding forcing administrators to overstretch their budgets. Our country spends billions of dollars on prison systems annually surpassing all federal funded programs. Tough criminal policies enacted have caused several challenges within the correctional systems (Carson & Golinelli, 2013).
According to Carson & Golinelli, (2013), Federal courts for years have directed state officials to improve prison facilities. Enforcing such directives is limited by the eighth amendment of the constitution. The eighth amendment provides immunity for the state from federal interference. It's not easy to enforce court orders because it means additional spending which is limited by the constitution (Carson & Golinelli, 2013).
Prison reforms are affected by legislatures who present various strategies to improve professionalism within the correctional systems. Some of the policy recommendations have caused unintended consequents that need to be rectified. Being a state legislature heading the committee for correction system reforms, I propose two actions that the correction systems can implement to improve and attain high levels of professionalism.

Different strategies that can be implemented to improve professionalism within the correctional systems. Improving standards through training and education programs are two actions that help correctional systems achieve higher levels of professionalism (Goldsmith, Halsey & Groves, 2016).
The current correctional methods used within prisons are inappropriate; most these facilities use inappropriate punishment standards based on the eighth amendment of the constitution which is not acceptable. Corporal punishment needs to be prohibited in correctional facilities but should be applied to certain criminals not everyone some prisoners are petty offenders and with proper guidance they can rectify their behavior. Specific sanctions are suitable for people who commit crimes, as a committee member, I believe that our correctional facilities are not well-equipped to handle individuals with mental illness. Prison personnel are not adequately equipped with skills to handle individuals with mental problems.
