Duties and Responsibilities of a Pharmacist toward a patient
Pharmacists have numerous amount of functions and responsibilities towards patients, among them being: dispensing prescriptions, communicating with prescribers, ensure patients safety, counsel patients and also work with patients in general health (Kushniruk and Borycki, 2010). All these is geared towards making the patient recover faster from whatever ailment they may be suffering from.
With reference to Robert Courtney’s case we are going to compare the essence of the roles and duty of a pharmacist. Robert Courtney is an American former pharmacist who owned and operated Research Medical Tower Pharmacy. He is popularly known for his convictions for pharmaceutical fraud. Robert Courtney is currently serving a thirty-year jail term for the convictions he was charged with.
Robert Courtney performed a number of crimes by not conducting the duties he was supposed to as a pharmacist and also violated a number of the patient’s rights. This may be explained through the tampering and adulterating of the chemotherapy drugs Taxol and Gemzar and by doing so he never ensured patient’s safety. As by Kushniruk and Borycki (2010), he also did not go ahead to counsel his patients on the drugs he was prescribing them to. Robert never took it as his duty to work with patients on their general health. His actions were guided by his egocentric nature and profit-mindedness.
