Specifically, the common issues that influence effective communication in criminal justice agencies are power, culture, language barrier, social conflicts, misunderstanding the message, prejudice, and using inappropriate communication channels (“Communication: Words Are Not Enough,” 2019). For instance, a high-ranking officer might not bother elaborating something to his or her subordinates, resulting in misunderstanding. A police officer or judge might use the power given to him or her inappropriately leading to miscommunication. For example, someone might post or comment on something on social media, and others might misinterpret it. Once the message is displayed on the web, the sender cannot control it. In that light, effective communication depends on how the target population will interpret the information. Some people might take the message out of context and give misleading opinions, influencing how others will understand. When it comes to the public, some communication problems likely to be encountered are attitude, cultural differences, listening skills, language, and the use of appropriate communication tools. For example, if an individual has a negative attitude about a specific audience, there is a high likelihood that the information communicated will be biased. In the criminal justice agencies, there should be proper protocols that people should follow to pass the message so that it can reach its correct destination. For instance, regardless of cultural and language differences, individuals should use the universal dialect when addressing things formally. Those in the position of power should not undermine their juniors or have the prejudice that can affect communication.
