“This above all: to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man” (Polonius, act 1 scene 3). Polonius's statement dents an individual to be true to own decisions and avoid falsifications in changing environments. This Shakespearean play follows Hamlet mourning the loss of his father while trying to avenge his death. Through trials and tribulations, we are introduced to many complex characters who deal with plenty of internal and external conflicts that determine said individual's outcome. Adaptation to changing circumstances usually guarantees an individual success. Characters unable to adapt to the changing situations quickly tend to be unsuccessful in the long run. The play reveals diverse identities and characteristics that characters tend to apply in dealing with life situations. In Hamlet, the main characters who adapt to their environments become successful; those who do not change are deemed worthless.
Hamlet retracts from his previous plans and intentions of killing Claudius when he finds him praying and confessing his sins. “To take him in the purging of his soul when he is fit and seasoned for his passage? No. Up, sword, and know thou a more horrid hent.” (Hamlet, act 3, scene 3) Hamlet cannot withstand the outcome of Claudius going to heaven when he conducts the murder. The scene makes Hamlet's plans unsuccessful because he cannot conduct the murder at that moment. Hamlet does not commit the planned murder of his uncle Claudius because the uncle is confessing his sins and seeking forgiveness from God. The inability to work as intended makes Hamlet's plans unsuccessful because of the changes in various situations.
In the play Hamlet, "he is not a character defined by the strength of will or intensity of passion, but by refinement of mind and sentiment." When Hamlet agonizes about killing Claudius, it is true that he is contemplative and not a strong enough person to conduct the murder. A King must be able to make snap decisions about the state's affairs and then act quickly on those decisions, which may not sound like bad quality, but it is not. However, when it comes to an Elizabethan audience, Hamlet's delay in retribution is a success because it allows them to examine the ramifications of Hamlet's wrath more thoroughly. As a drama about revenge, Hamlet succeeds because it forces us to ponder the real reasons for Hamlet's vengeance. Because Claudius killed his King and married his mother, Hamlet swears he will not feel any guilt for killing him. Claudius' claim that Hamlet killed him because he had usurped his rightful throne as King is debunked by Hamlet making no other mention of it throughout the play.
Claudius's role in the play changes, but he does not adapt well to the circumstances when he marries Hamlet’s mother. From being an inferior brother to Hamlet's father, he becomes the King after the King's death "O God, a beast that wants discourse of reason.
