The story is about war and the main character is Tim where he throws a grenade at an enemy soldier who walks on a trail that he has hid with his fellow soldier taking turns to guard themselves. The young, short slender soldier is killed by the grenade and Tim and Kiowa are left to contemplate what would have happened if the roles were reversed but Tim cannot forgive himself and takes responsibility for the murder of the soldier. The other character in the novel is Kathleen who asks if Tim had killed anyone as a basis for his fondness for writing war stories. The setting is that of war where Tim and Kiowa hidden in a trail take turns to guard themselves against an ambush by enemy soldiers.
